Teaching Philosophy

My goal with any student is to have them play at the fullest of their potential.  Understanding that most students (especially young ones) will not pursue music as a professional career, I teach to instill a passion for music and a system of problem solving as issues come up in their study.  I believe that understanding music first comes through learning and understanding how to read music.  Therefore all of my beginning students learn how to read music.  Music literacy is extremely important in any musical style or genre  and will only give the student a better understanding of the music they choose to play.

Development of a working technique as well as practice habits that create results will only help the student in whichever musical endeavor they choose to pursue.  I stress time management, efficient and goal oriented practice so that forward moving progress happens as much as possible.  There will always be plateaus in one’s developmental process, however I work with the student to overcome these obstacles as quickly and “painless” as possible.  Even with my classical students, I introduce and work with them to read chord charts, basic music theory and chord construction to give students the tools to understand what they are playing.  Above all else, my main goal is to help the student find their musical voice, and allow them to communicate as clearly as possible their musical intentions.
