Hand writes, "In 1968 America was suffering through a period of political upheaval. The Vietnam War was raging, the country was divided, and the Civil Rights Movement continued to challenge the moral conscience of the country. Elegy for a King was written in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in the wake of the sudden loss of a great universal spirit."
